Meet Dr Henry

Hi I am Dr Henry van Niekerk. I was born in 1973 and grew up in Pretoria where I matriculated in
1990 from Silverton High School. I subsequently studied medicine and immediately thereafter
specialised. I qualified as a Specialist Surgeon in 2003. During my varsity years I was actively involved
in student life and led the Christian student group ‘Medikruis’ at medical campus. I also sang in an
acapella group ‘The Holy Boys’ and ran my first Comrades in 1993.

After finishing my studies, I moved to Pietermaritzburg in 2004 and has been practicing here since.
Like all ‘Maritzburg surgeons I am a generalist and attend to the broad range of general surgical
problems, which encompasses everything from taking out gallbladders to thyroid surgery,
colonoscopies to laparoscopic colon cancer resections, pile operations to breast cancer surgery. I
have 2 speciality – interests, namely bariatric (weight loss) surgery as well as dialysis access surgery –
providing dialysis access to people with end-stage kidney failure.

I am engaged to Dr Rivonia Singh (a specialist physician who also works in town) and have 4
superstar children. My 3 daughters have finished school and work and study in Cape-Town, and my
son attends Grace College.

I am a keen sportsman and have done several Comrades, Sani-2-Seas and Ironman70.3’s. I have sung
in the Midlands Chamber Choir until recently and enjoy the occasional game of chess and poker with
my mates.

I have been involved with several medical device start-ups and am currently working with Dr Brett
Cullis on a novel hemodialysis needling system.

I’m a member of the following Surgical Societies:

  • Association of Surgeons of South African (ASSA)
  • International Federation for Surgery of Obesity (IFSO)
  • South African Society of Endoscopic Surgeons (SASES)
  • Medical Association of South Africa (SAMA)
  • South African society for Surgery of Obesity (SASSO)

If I can be of service to you please get in touch with me.
