“A good surgeon operates with his mind, hands and experience. An excellent one adds his heart.” – Dr Henry van Niekerk
Hello, I’m Dr Henry van Niekerk and since I can remember I had a strong desire to be useful to others and make a difference in the world. So I became a doctor, and quickly fell in love with working in theatre.
It’s in theatre where I experience how careful intervention can create highly meaningful change, while outside of it I find deep satisfaction in connecting with people in their time of need. After experiencing my own personal trauma, I saw how when you or a loved one is in distress, you’re stripped of so many layers and you find yourself in a very honest and vulnerable place. It is meeting people here that I feel is the most important, and rewarding, part of what I do.
So now you know a little bit about why I do what I do, let me introduce you to Henry the family man, athlete, musician and, of course, the surgeon.
I’m a proud father of three beautiful daughters and an amazing son, which I raise together with my partner Chrissie in Pietermaritzburg.
When I’m not working at my practice at Life Hilton Hospital, you can find me hanging out with my lovely family or running my dogs in the forest. I also regularly jam with the blokes as vocalist in our small-town rock band, ‘The Occasionals’.
I graduated with an MBChB from the University of Pretoria in 1997 and worked as a clinic doctor in the north of Pretoria. This was where I realized my real purpose and passion lay in working in theatre. So back to the University of Pretoria I went to specialize at their Department of Surgery.
Five and a half hard-working years later, I qualified as a Specialist Surgeon with an Mmed(Surg) and FCS(SA). Since then I’ve completed several post-grad training courses and congresses to keep up to date with significant advances in surgical technique and thinking.
I also started a small medical devices research start-up company, with two engineering friends, called Endogrowth Pty Ltd. In 2015, we developed and patented a novel ‘Gripsock’ device.
I’m a member of the following Surgical Societies:
- Association of Surgeons of South African (ASSA)
- South African Society of Endoscopic Surgeons (SASES)
- Medical Association of South Africa (SAMA)
- Society of Vascular Surgeons of South Africa (VASSA)
If I can be of service to you please get in touch with me.
